EASY VALENTINE’S DAY CRAFT

Valentine’s Day might not be everyone’s favourite holiday but who doesn’t love a good excuse to made cute, super easy Valentine’s Day craft?

Feeling stuck on what to do for an easy Valentine’s Day craft?

My biggest rule of thumb when having small kids in my house all the time: always have easy crafts on hand to pull out at a moments notice! This easy Valentine’s Day craft was a great one to pull out one February morning when it was too cold to stay outside for as long as we had planned. Using a simple plaque from the dollar store and a little paint we had on hand already we made some adorable decor for the playroom.

Every time a new season’s products start to flow into our local dollar store I love doing a small haul of themed items. Our local Dollarama and Dollar Tree both offer a great variety of crafting, sensory play and decor items at cheap prices.

If you live near a thrift store, be sure to head in there too – I’ve found many of the same materials for even cheaper prices and added the bonus of being a little more environmentally friendly!

While a plain heart plaque could turn into a million different easy Valentine’s Day craft ideas I let the kids doing it have full creative independence for what they wanted to turn it into. I left them with the plaques, some pink and red paint, different sized paintbrushes and EZPZ mats to aid in an easy cleanup process. When they were done I added some washable Crayola glitter paint to their paint palette for some additional fun.

I love simple activities like this when I have a room of varying ages. The youngest exploring their creativity was 13 months and oldest was just shy of being 4. While the eldest finished it faster than the younger ones, they helped each other out with painting and each got something different out of it.

When everyone was done I simply hung them up to dry and will leave them as is to decorate the playroom. If you wanted this to be a two part activity to fill more time, when the hearts dried you could: 

• Add words to be traced (love, happy, friend…)
• Add small decor (glitter, foam stickers, small gems…)
• Splatter it with a different colour paint 
• Add stripes, polka dots, zig zags, etc.
• Modge Podge tissue paper hearts 
• Modge Podge a photo and use them as a parent/grandparent gift

While not a necessity, I love having our EZPZ mats for easy Valentine’s Day crafts like this and find it’s a great way to upcycle them if your kids outgrow them for food. A few reasons why include:

• They stay put on the table which eliminates paint trays being tipped over onto the table and floor
• They’re extremely easy to wash paint and glue off of thanks to being made from silicone – they’re even dishwasher safe
• Each kid having their own mat with supplies means no taking supplies from each other and everyone can go at their own pace
