FIRST BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE SMASH

THE TWINS FIRST BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE SMASH

A SUPER SIMPLE DIY VERSION OF A TYPICAL CAKE SMASH

AREN’T THEY ADORABLE?

If you’ve seen my First Birthday Pizza Smash post then you’ll know I was really set on having a simple, unique first birthday smash. But I couldn’t help it, I needed to do a cake one also! I’m still on team full-cakes-are-a-waste so we actually did this the day before their first birthday party and used the birthday decor as the background and two cupcakes from the batch I had already made for the party! Oh my gosh, the photos were so worth it. I think using a small cupcake instead of a cake is one of the reasons it worked so well. They weren’t overwhelmed by the amount of cake in front of them, it was a minimal amount of waste and the sugar high afterwards was definitely manageable.

What was our party decor?

Since we based their smash photos off my favourite food, we based their birthday party theme off of hubby’s favourite snack: donuts! As everything I do, I wanted to keep it low-waste and simple. But, you’re also only one once. After the premature birth, the long NICU stay, the big move and everything else it felt like a celebration for all of us for having made it through the year. So, I went out of my usual shopping and headed to Party City to grab some fun decor.

So yeah, zero regrets over here.

I did start these photos with the tripod, but I ended up taking the camera off so I could get the adorable close-up shots of them. Remember – you can make these memories in any way you want. So if you want to go all out and get the professional photos with the big cake then you go for it! But never feel like you have to. If you want to toss a cupcake at your kid and snap some photos on your phone that works too.
